7 Southern Wedding Traditions for Your Wedding Day | Wedding Planning Tips

October 04, 2017 in Greg Boulus Events | Tips

As some of you may know, I (Mary) am not from the South. Originally from California, when I moved to Augusta I had a lot to learn about Southern culture and tradition. Greg Boulus weddings have always been known for being classic, beautifully orchestrated affairs that are perfectly Southern and perfectly timeless. This means that typically our clients are also perfectly Southern with classic tastes. They want to pay homage to their roots and incorporate all the different traditions of a classic Southern wedding. Here we have collected a few of the top Southern wedding traditions that our couples incorporate into their big days. Have you and any of your loved ones included these in the festivities? Comment below!

1. Groom's cake

Fishing? Football? Golf? Each of our grooms have a different passion/hobby/favorite kind of cake and that is reflected in the personalized groom's cake served either at the rehearsal dinner or as an addition at the wedding reception. We love how creative the cakes can become and they are a wonderful way to incorporate a little something for a groom who may otherwise have let you take the reigns on the rest of the wedding day.

2. Burying of the bourbon

No one wants rain on their wedding day right? One Southern tradition that may or may not help keep those storm clouds away includes a bottle of bourbon and a shovel. Probably 90% of our  couples bury bourbon at the location of the wedding to ensure that their day is rain-free. And (*knock on wood*) we have had a pretty great track record of no-rain on our wedding days!

3. Bridal Portraits

One tradition that is very common among our Southern brides is taking bridal portraits with your photographer before the wedding day. Before modern times, wedding photography was not a popular expenditure on a wedding day, so the bridal portrait was truly the only image captured of the whole celebration! Now our brides take the time to have a bridal shoot to ensure that there are beautiful images captured without the pressures of the big day. If you are on the fence about taking bridal portraits, make sure to read our blog post full of advice from wedding photographers on this topic!

4. Southern Cuisine

Let's not forget one of the best parts about a Southern wedding, the food! Shrimp n grits, collard greens, oysters, it is not a wedding here without some sort of homage to the delicious food of the South. Many of our clients prefer to serve their food station-style, as this ensures mingling, dancing, and nibbling all evening long!

5. Bridal Luncheon

One of the sweetest pre-wedding festivities that give our brides and their girls a chance to soak up the bride's last moments before the wedding day is the bridal luncheon. Hosted the morning or early afternoon the day before the wedding, it is a wonderful way for the bride to decompress and enjoy some time with her best friends and family.

6. Second Lines

A tradition that is originally New Orleans-based, second lines are a band-escorted march from the ceremony location to the reception. And we LOVE when our weddings include this festive tradition! It is such a fun way to kick-off the party post-ceremony and also a great way to navigate your guests from point A to point B!

7. Family Heirloom "Something Borrowed"

As most people know, a bride must have "Something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue" on her wedding day. And our brides always have the most incredible family heirlooms for their "something borrowed." Whether it is a family bible carried by each woman in their family on their wedding day, a pocket-watch from their great-grandfather, or a ring that has been in their family for centuries we are always amazed by the stories behind our bride's wedding day trinkets.

Have you ever been curious about what your wedding planner is up to on your wedding day? From the time the sun rises until you rest your head on your pillow, your planner is dedicated to ensuring your wedding goes off without a hitch. Here is a fun play-by-play from one of our weddings this past October.

Differences between Wedding Planners and Venue Managers
Differences between Wedding Planners and Venue Managers

Venue managers are a vital part of the planner’s vendor team, and they ensure everything taking place at the venue in their control is in order. However, if you are looking for support that relieves the stress of procuring and managing handfuls of vendors of various skills and overseeing their services on your wedding day to execute your vision, engage a wedding planner who will be your go-to professional for all things design and coordination.

Selecting Your Venue
Selecting Your Venue

Oftentimes, one of the very first steps in the wedding planning process is selecting a venue for your reception. When doing so, there are a handful of things we keep in mind to ensure the location will suit the needs of your wedding day. Detailed in this blog post are five things included on that list.

Wedding Cake Inspiration | Best of GB Events

September 20, 2017 in Best of GB Events

There are many perks when it comes to being a wedding planner, working with wonderful clients, creating with beautiful flowers, designing gorgeous events, but the icing on the cake (pun intended) is "helping" our clients taste-test for their wedding cake.

One of the prettiest, sweetest details of the wedding day, wedding cakes are usually a focal point of our event designs. We give our cakes a place of honor to be admired by guests until the time comes that they get to devour all the goodness.

We love to make the planning process fun and special for our couples, so we like to schedule your cake tasting here at our shop. With a bottle of bubbly popped, our clients get to relax and enjoy the experience while being walked through the flavors and design process by our very talented cake designer friends.

Keep scrolling to see a collection of some of our best wedding cakes from years' past. You can see some clients go for the traditional wedding cake, with either a more or organic or more ornate design. We love incorporating fresh flowers to tie in the overall wedding design and especially love when couples get creative and have multiple kinds of wedding cakes as well!

Let us know in the comments below which cake is your favorite!

5 Best Winter Honeymoon Destinations

September 06, 2017

Winter weddings are very popular in Augusta since the heat of a southern summer can really put a damper on the festivities. For all our winter brides and grooms who will be booking honeymoons soon, we have compiled a quick list of some of the best winter honeymoon destinations. Check out the list below and let us know where you would want to travel to escape the cold (or embrace it!)!

Rio De Janeiro

Winter in the north means it's summer in the south! Brazil is the perfect place to escape for some much needed warmth during these chilly winter months! And February is an especially fun time to visit this city because it's Carnival!

Switzerland

For the couples who are ready to fully embrace the winter season, Switzerland is the ultimate winter wonderland escape. For those who love to ski and snowboard, the Alps are a must-do, but for those couples who are not the biggest adventurers, you can find the most idyllic villages and spas to relax and unwind in.

Belize

With the end of hurricane season, early winter is the perfect time to avoid crowds and enjoy the perfect weather of Belize. While it may not be the most cost-effective time of year to go, this locale is perfect for those couples who want a the perfect mix of relaxation and adventure on their honeymoon. The Mayan ruins are a must-see.

Barbados

Out of all the stunning Caribbean islands, Barbados definitely is a bit more luxurious for those couples looking to splurge on their tropical honeymoon. Barbados' coastline caters to a variety of fun water activities including snorkeling, diving, and surfing.

South Africa

Again, if you are looking to escape the winter cold, this is the perfect time of year to visit the beautiful country of South Africa! With warm temps and beautiful scenery, it is hard to beat! Also a great place to travel if you are a lover of wine!
